Description

*Thamnophis sirtalis*, commonly known as the garter snake, is a small, highly active colubrid snake species indigenous to North America. Recognized by its sleek body, distinct longitudinal yellow or red stripes, and expressive round pupils, this diurnal reptile is one of the few snake species that is genuinely active during the day, making it an engaging display animal for reptile enthusiasts.

Unlike most solitary snakes, many garter snake species are inherently social and thrive when housed in small, same-sex cohabitating groups, demonstrating complex social behaviors and communal basking. They are agile, fast-moving, and require a varied diet consisting of safe feeder fish, earthworms, and small rodents, along with a warm thermal gradient and clean water for soaking.

Key Species Overview & Care Specifications:
- Origin & Habitat: Found across diverse North American habitats, ranging from wet meadows and marshes to suburban gardens and forest edges.
- Size & Lifespan: Compact colubrid growing between 50cm to 90cm (20 to 36 inches) in length, with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years in captivity under proper care.
- Diurnal & Active Behavior: Highly active during daylight hours; frequently explores climbing branches, water dishes, and basking spots.
- Social Cohabitation: One of the rare snake species that can be successfully housed in small, compatible, same-sex groups in adequately sized terrariums.
- Varied Diet: Thrives on a varied diet of safe (thiaminase-free) feeder fish, chopped earthworms, and appropriately sized frozen-thawed pinky mice.
- Terrarium Setup & Heating: Requires a horizontal glass terrarium with a warm basking spot (28°C to 30°C), a cooler side (22°C to 24°C), a large water basin, and a dry, absorbent substrate.

Build the ultimate naturalistic habitat for your active reptiles. Explore glass terrariums, substrate options, basking lamps, and thermostat controllers from Malta's premier online reptile specialist, and enjoy fast, reliable doorstep delivery across Malta and Gozo.
