The African Spurred Tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also known as the Sulcata Tortoise, is one of the largest and most impressive tortoise species kept as a pet. Native to the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, this majestic reptile is known for its friendly nature, impressive size, and hardy temperament.

Our Sulcata Tortoises are ethically captive-bred, ensuring excellent health, strong growth, and legal, CITES-compliant origins. With the right care, they become long-lived, intelligent companions that form strong bonds with their keepers.

Key Features:

  • Captive-bred – healthy, legal, and CITES-registered

  • One of the largest tortoise species in the world

  • Hardy and highly adaptable to warm climates like Malta’s

  • Calm, interactive, and easy to handle with regular care

  • Lifespan: 70–100 years with proper care

  • Adult size: up to 60–80 cm shell length, 40–60 kg weight

  • Strictly herbivorous – thrives on grasses, hay, and leafy greens

  • Ideal for outdoor gardens and spacious enclosures

Care & Setup:

  • Enclosure: Outdoor pen or secure garden area with shelter

  • Temperature: Daytime 28–35°C, basking spot 38–40°C, nighttime 22–25°C

  • Lighting: UVB 10.0 or 12% when housed indoors or during cooler months

  • Substrate: Soil, sand, or natural grass for burrowing and grazing

  • Diet: High-fibre, low-protein – primarily grass, weeds, and hay. Occasional vegetables and cactus pads are suitable.

  • Provide fresh water and cuttlebone for calcium at all times

  • Avoid fruit and high-protein foods, which can cause shell deformities

The Sulcata Tortoise is a gentle giant — intelligent, curious, and full of personality. With the proper setup, it thrives outdoors year-round in Malta’s warm climate and becomes a lifelong companion.
