Green Tree Python

*Morelia viridis*, commonly known as the Green Tree Python (or GTP), is a highly prized arboreal snake species native to the rainforests of New Guinea, eastern Indonesia, and the Cape York Peninsula of Australia. World-renowned for its brilliant lime-green adult coloration, striking blue or yellow accents, and iconic resting pose—draped in tight coils over a horizontal tree branch with its head rested centrally—this species is a masterpiece of rainforest adaptation.

Famous for its dramatic ontogenetic color change, Green Tree Pythons are born as bright neon yellow or brick-red hatchlings before transitioning into their brilliant green adult coloration as they mature over 1 to 2 years. As specialized canopy dwellers, GTPs require tall, humid terrarium environments with secure horizontal perches, precise temperature gradients, and high ambient humidity to support effortless shedding and optimal hydration.

Key Species Overview & Care Specifications:
- Origin & Habitat: Native to tropical rainforest canopies, spending nearly its entire life elevated in tree branches and vines.
- Size & Lifespan: Reaches an average adult length of 120cm to 180cm (4 to 6 feet) and can live 15 to 20+ years in captivity with proper husbandry.
- Ontogenetic Color Change: Hatchlings emerge bright yellow or red, gradually shifting to vibrant emerald green as they reach maturity.
- Specialized Horizontal Perching: Demands sturdy, smooth, correctly sized horizontal perches (removable for easy maintenance) positioned at various thermal heights.
- Arboreal Terrarium Requirements: Requires a vertical glass or PVC enclosure with proper ventilation, high relative humidity (70% to 80%), and daily misting.
- Strict Carnivorous Diet: Opportunistic ambush predator; feeds on appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice or rats offered via long feeding tongs.
- Precise Temperature Gradient: Thrives with a warm basking area of 29°C to 31°C and an ambient temperature of 25°C to 27°C, controlled via thermostatic heat panels or ceramic elements.
