Sugar Glider Care & Supplies Malta

*Petaurus breviceps*, commonly known as the sugar glider, is a small, arboreal marsupial native to the tropical and temperate forests of Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Renowned for their striking gliding membrane (patagium) extending from their wrists to ankles, soft grey fur, and large nocturnal eyes, these intelligent and social animals have become popular exotic pets worldwide.

As highly social colony animals in the wild, sugar gliders must never be kept alone in captivity. They thrive when housed in bonded pairs or small single-sex or neutered groups. To support their active, tree-dwelling nature, they require tall, spacious wire enclosures equipped with climbing branches, fabric pouches, pouches for sleeping, and a highly specialized omnivorous diet rich in nectar, sap, insects, and fresh fruits.

Key Species Overview & Care Specifications:
- Origin & Habitat: Native to forest canopy regions of Australasia, spending life leaping and gliding between trees.
- Size & Lifespan: Compact body length of 12cm to 15cm (plus a long bushy tail); can live 12 to 15 years in captivity with proper care and nutrition.
- Social Structure: Obligate social animals; keeping a solitary sugar glider leads to severe emotional stress, self-mutilation, and depression.
- Specialized Diet: Requires a balanced omnivorous diet consisting of leadbeater's mixture, high-grade nectar/sap powders, live gut-loaded feeder insects (crickets, mealworms), and limited fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Arboreal Housing Requirements: Demands a tall, vertical cage setup (minimum 90cm to 120cm height) with narrow bar spacing, climbing ropes, sleeping pouches, and an open-spoke exercise wheel.
- Nocturnal Behavior: Active mainly at night; requires a dark, quiet daytime environment to sleep safely inside hanging fleece pouches.
