Building a pre-formed pond is a great weekend project that can add beauty and tranquility to your garden. Here's a guide to get you started:

Materials

  • Pre-formed pond liner
  • Sand
  • Landscape fabric (optional)
  • Level
  • Shovel
  • Utility knife
  • Tape (optional)
  • Rubber mallet (optional)
  • Plants for your pond
  • Rocks and gravel

Steps

  • Choose a location. Select a spot in your garden that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight a day. Avoid placing the pond under trees that shed leaves or have aggressive roots.

  • Dig the hole. Place the pre-formed pond liner in the chosen spot to mark the outline of the pond. Dig the hole slightly larger and deeper than the pond liner, following the contours of the liner. Allow for an extra 2-3 inches of depth for the sand bed.

  • Level the bottom of the hole. Use a level to ensure the bottom of the hole is level. Remove any rocks or sharp objects that could puncture the liner.

  • Line the hole with sand. Add a 2-3 inch layer of sand over the bottom of the hole. Smooth out the sand to create a level bed for the liner.

  • Place the liner in the hole. Carefully unfold the pre-formed pond liner and position it in the hole. Tip: On a hot day, the liner may be more pliable. If you live in a cooler climate, you can warm up the liner slightly in the sun to make it more flexible for positioning.

  • Fill the pond with water. Slowly begin to fill the pond with water. This will help to weigh down the liner and conform it to the shape of the hole. As the pond fills, gently push out any air pockets that form between the liner and the soil.

  • Trim the liner. Once the pond is full, use a utility knife to trim off the excess liner around the edges. You can fold the excess liner under the lip of the pond liner or hide it under rocks or edging.

  • Add the finishing touches. Here comes the fun part! Add rocks, gravel, and plants around the perimeter of the pond to create a natural look. You can also add a pump and filter to keep the pond water clean.

  • For filtration there are several options like the SunSun 3in1 (Filter,UV & Fountain)
