Description:

The Pacman frog, also known as the South American horned frog or Argentine horned frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli), is a species of frog native to South America, particularly Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil

  • Appearance:

    • Pacman frogs are named for their wide, round bodies and large mouths, which resemble the video game character Pac-Man.
    • They have a flattened appearance with short limbs and a wide mouth.
    • Their coloration can vary widely, ranging from shades of green and brown to orange, yellow, and albino morphs. Some individuals have patterns or markings on their skin.

    Habitat:

    • Pacman frogs inhabit tropical and subtropical regions, including grasslands, marshes, and forests.
    • They are often found near bodies of water, such as ponds, streams, and flooded areas.

    Diet:

    • Pacman frogs are voracious eaters and are known for their large appetites.
    • They are carnivorous and primarily eat live prey, including insects, small rodents, fish, and other frogs.
    • In captivity, they can be fed a variety of live prey items such as crickets, roaches, mealworms, waxworms, and pinkie mice.

    Lifespan:

    • Pacman frogs have a relatively long lifespan for amphibians, with individuals living 6-10 years or more in captivity when provided with proper care.

    Care Requirements:

    • Enclosure: Provide a spacious enclosure with a secure lid to prevent escape. A substrate such as coconut fiber or moss can be used to maintain humidity and provide burrowing opportunities.
    • Temperature and Humidity: Maintain a temperature range of 75-85°F (24-29°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Humidity levels should be kept between 50-70%. A shallow water dish should be provided for soaking.
    • Diet: Offer a varied diet of live prey items dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements. Avoid feeding large prey items that could potentially harm or choke the frog.
    • Handling: Pacman frogs are not typically handled often, as they have delicate skin and can be stressed by excessive handling. If handling is necessary, do so gently and support their body properly to prevent injury.
