Description

Hemitheconyx caudicinctus, commonly known as the African fat-tailed gecko, is a docile, nocturnal terrestrial reptile native to the dry tropical scrublands and savannahs of West Africa. Highly prized for its gentle temperament, soft velvet-like skin, and distinctive plump tail, this species makes an exceptional pet for both beginner and experienced reptile keepers.

Similar in size to leopard geckos, African fat-tailed geckos are easily distinguished by their broader heads, dark banding or striped morph patterns, and specialized tail that stores reserve fat for periods of food scarcity. In captivity, they require moderate humidity, warm thermal gradients, and a dedicated insectivorous diet to thrive.

Key Species Overview & Care Specifications:
- Origin & Habitat: Native to West African river basins, dry woodlands, and semi-arid regions, utilizing burrows to stay cool and hydrated.
- Size & Lifespan: Reaches an average adult size of 18cm to 23cm (7 to 9 inches) and can live 15 to 20+ years in captivity with proper care.
- Natural Insect Diet: Strictly insectivorous; feeds on live crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, and locusts dusted with essential calcium and multivitamin powders.
- Humidity Requirements: Prefers a moderate relative humidity of 50% to 70%, with access to a damp humid hide box lined with sphagnum moss to ensure clean shedding.
- Heating & Temperature Gradient: Requires a warm basking zone (30°C to 32°C) maintained via a regulated heat mat or deep heat projector, and a cool side (22°C to 25°C).
- Temperament & Handling: Docile, slow-moving, and easily tamed, making them well-suited for calm, stress-free handling once fully acclimated.

Ensure your fat-tailed gecko enjoys a healthy, stress-free environment with high-quality coconut coir substrate, humid hideouts, and reliable thermostatic controls.
