The Reeves Turtle (Mauremys reevesii) is a highly popular semi-aquatic species, widely regarded as one of the best choices for hobbyists due to its manageable size and interactive personality. Unlike many other pond turtles, Reeves Turtles are known to "recognize" their keepers and can become quite bold during feeding time.
The White Edition of the Easy LED Tortum lighting or a dedicated Tortum habitat (like the Tortum 100) provides an ideal environment for this species, highlighting their unique shell ridges and active behavior.
Manageable Size: Females grow to about 20β23 cm, while males remain smaller, usually around 10β12 cm.
Unique Appearance: Distinguished by three prominent ridges (keels) running down the length of the shell.
Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live 15β20+ years.
Social Behavior: Generally more docile than Red-Eared Sliders, though they should still be handled minimally to avoid stress.
Reeves Turtles are unique in that they are not strong swimmers. Their habitat setup must reflect this to prevent exhaustion or drowning.
Water Depth: Keep the water relatively shallow. For hatchlings, the water should be no deeper than the width of their shell. For adults, ensure there are plenty of "resting ladders" or plants so they can climb to the surface easily.
Basking & UV: They are avid baskers. A dedicated UVB light and a heat lamp (maintaining a basking spot of 32β35Β°C) are essential for shell health and digestion.
Water Quality: Because they are messy eaters, a high-capacity filter (like a pressurized canister filter) is recommended to keep the water clear and odor-free.
Reeves Turtles are omnivores.
Young Turtles: Require a protein-rich diet (pellets, dried shrimp, bloodworms) to support rapid growth.
Adults: Should be transitioned to a diet higher in leafy greens and aquatic plants, with protein offered 2β3 times per week.
